This short video tutorial is an attempt to demonstrate how to Zero Beat a modern tranceiver that has a built-in offset, such as my Kenwood TS-870S and other similar radios. Zero Beating is the process of tuning your radio to the exact same frequency as the station you are receiving. The steps are simple. Find or tune in the station you wish to copy. Set the radio to CW mode and make sure the VOX is off. We want to key the radio to generate side tone but we DO NOT want to transmit. Now, while listening to the station you wish to Zero Beat, key the radio, generating side tone but not transmitting. Now slowly turn the tuning dial of the radio until the signal you wish to Zero Beat becomes the same pitch as the side tone. Once they are the same pitch, they will sort of ring together. You have now Zero Beated the signal ! Click the link below for the video tutorial. It will bring up Window's Media Player and start to stream the video clip. Give it a few moments to load. |
